Top 7 Confraternities in Nigeria and their History
In Nigeria, a confraternity is a group that is nominally
university-based, though 'street and creek' confraternities began in the
1990s. The first confraternity, the Pyrates Confraternity was created
as a social organization for promising students.
However, as new confraternities were formed, they became increasingly violent through the 1970s and 1980s. By the 1990s, many confraternities largely operated as criminal gangs, called "campus cults" in Nigeria. Besides normal criminal activity, confraternities have been linked to political violence, as well as the conflict in the Niger Delta.
In no particular order, here are the "Top 7 Confraternities in Nigeria and their History"
1 PYRATE CONFRATERNITY
Ahoi-Seadog
In 1952, Wole Soyinka and a group of six friends (Ralph Opara, Ikhehare Aig-Imokhuede, Sylvanus Egbuchie, Nathaniel Oyelola, Pius Oleghe, Olumuyiwa Awe) formed the Pyrate Confraternity at the elite University College, Ibadan, then part of the University of London. According to the Pyrates, the "Magnificent Seven", as they called themselves, observed that the university was populated with wealthy students associated with the colonial powers and a few poorer students striving in manner and dress to be accepted by the more advantaged students, while social life was dictated by tribal affiliation. Soyinka would later note that the Pyrates wanted to differentiate themselves from "stodgy establishment and its pretentious products in a new educational institution different from a culture of hypocritical and affluent middleclass, different from alienated colonial aristocrats". The organization also known as the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) adopted the motto "Against all conventions", the skull and crossbones as their logo, while members adopted confraternity names such as "Cap'n Blood" and "Long John Silver". When fellow students protested a proposal to build a railroad across the road leading to the university, fearing that easier transportation would make the university less exclusive, the Pyrates successfully ridiculed the argument as elitist. Roughly analogous to the fraternities and sororities of North America, the Pyrates Confraternity proved popular among students, even after the original members moved on. Membership was open to any promising male student, regardless of tribe or race, but selection was stringent and most applicants were denied. For almost 20 years, the Pyrates were the only confraternity on Nigerian campuses.

retreat organised by the National Economic Council chaired by Vice
President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

National Assembly to pass 2016 budget today
After weeks of delay, both chambersof
the National Assembly received a report on the 2016 budget on Tuesday
from the Senate and the House of Representatives Joint Committee on
Appropriation.
The report retained the corrected total
budget figure of N6.07tn as presented to the National Assembly by
President Muhammadu Buhari.
There were strong indications that the two chambers of the National Assembly would pass the 2016 budget today (Wednesday).
The federal lawmakers, who had earlier
slated last week for the submission of the report, postponed it because
of fresh errors they said were discovered in the fiscal document.
In the Senate, the Chairman of the
Appropriation Committee, Senator Danjuma Goje, presented the report of
the budget on the floor of the upper chamber.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on
Education (Basic), Senator Aliyu Wamakko, confirmed to one of our
correspondents that the budget would be considered and passed today
(Wednesday).
He said the Senate might possibly hold two sessions on Wednesday to enable it to pass the fiscal document.
He said, “We have perfected necessary
arrangements to ensure that the budget is considered and passed before
we proceed on recess tomorrow (Wednesday).’’
The PUNCH learnt that the
Senate would proceed on Easter Break on Wednesday as a result of the
trial of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, which resumes at the Code
of Conduct Tribunal on Thursday.
In the House of Representatives, investigations by The PUNCH indicated that many lawmakers raised doubts as to whether the report contained padded provisions.
Members reportedly “grumbled” that there
was no verifiable information on the several meetings on the budget
held between the National Assembly’s joint committee and the officials
of the executive, led by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.
“There were several meetings the officials held with the executive in their bid to clean up the errors in the budget.
“Those meetings did not provide details
of the outcome; members still cannot vouch for this report, that it does
not contain padded provisions in spite of the efforts made to clean up
the budget”, a National Assembly official disclosed to The PUNCH.
It was gathered that the suspicion of
padded provisions was the “real reason” the joint committee failed twice
to produce the report of the budget before Tuesday.
The development confirmed an exclusive report by The PUNCH last week that fresh discrepancies were delaying the submission of the report.
Findings showed that in a bid to bring
the matter under control, the various caucuses of the House held
marathon meetings up to Monday night, where the members were said to
have been briefed on the need to accept the budget so that government
activities could move forward.
It was learnt that the meetings were
rounded off by a meeting of the leadership of the House on Monday night
and another meeting on Tuesday morning few hours to the commencement of
sitting.
The Speaker of the House, Mr. Yakubu
Dogara, presided over the leadership meeting, which also had in
attendance the House Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as other
principal officers.
The Chairman, House Committee on Media
and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, claimed that there were no
new discrepancies in the budget.
“There is no problem at all; the report has been laid,” he stated.
He admitted that a budget could not be
“100 per cent perfect”, adding that the final report was the painstaking
effort of the joint committee.
The House had planned to receive the
report on Monday and pass the budget, but had to suspend the
consideration in honour of a member, who died over the weekend.
The late member, Mr. Musa Onwana, represented Nasarawa State in the House.
Dogara, who presided over the session, only allowed the report to be laid due to “overriding national interest.”
He called that the House should adjourned till Wednesday (today) for the consideration and possible passing of the budget.
Members later observed a minute’s silence in honour of their late colleague and also prayed for the repose of his soul.

At least 230 others sustained injuries

AMAZING FACTS ABOUT THE PENIS I
There are numerous facts about the penis that most of us don’t know which are going to be analyzed in the series;
-The average erect penis is about 5.5-6.2 inches long – and 94% of guys check in at this length. Only 6% have a micropenis,
which means it’s less than 2.75 inches when erect. If you are worried
about your size, you should shave, which makes the penis look bigger.
-There are two kinds of penises. The shower looks big but doesn’t
grow much bigger with erection. The grower may look small, but it
expands and lengthens by anything up to double when it gets erect. If
you’re a grower, you may actually end up bigger than a shower. So don’t
get jealous!

Funny But True… All Nigerian Students Need To See This – Do You Agree With This Proffesor?
Read below:-
Lecturers in Federal University of Technology, Faculty of Engineering boarded a plane and when the plane was about to take off. The pilot said welcome on board ladies and gentlemen. May I be pleased to inform you that this plane was manufactured by your students in the university and this is its first time of flying. Thats a good news isn’t it?
Immediately they heard that, everybody ran out of the plane except one professor who sat comfortably.
People were surprised and rushed to ask him why he’s still sitting. He smiled and replied there’s no need to run out because if its true that this plane was made by our students. Then with what we taught them I’m very sure that the plane will not even move…
